Hey Marcos, Thanks for the Free Techno
On this beautiful Saturday, I am sitting here at my “wedding desk” in the dining room. It’s really just a dining table turned to face the window with an ergonomic chair from the Container Store made of teal bungee cords, a plant that is coming back to life, a printer, a bunch of plugs and chargers, a box of Valentine’s chocolates from Pat’s Porch in the Ville, my wedding binder and scraps of to-do lists, and finally, 2 laptops. Why 2 laptops? Well, one is my Mac baby and it is my lifeblood. The other is a relic that holds the key to my past and I’m trying to get some of that back.
You know how they say you’re a child of the 80s or 90s or whatever, but for me, I consider my coming of age in the late 90s early 2000s. You know what I mean. We had our first alcoholic beverage way before we learned how to tweet. Music and movies were just awesome then too. We had personal desktop computers if we were lucky, and everyone had Napster and then Limewire. So I am the proud owner of thousands of free songs, some suggested by a guy in my dorm, some from my roommate’s dance movie obsession, some copied from CDs. That is just not the way the world does music anymore, but I want my old songs! I had already painstakingly transferred them via AIM (yes, AOL Instant Messenger) to my Dell Inspiron laptop, which just crawls like a snail and takes hours to boot. Knowing I was itching to get my groove on, for Valentine’s Day, my future hubby got me a classic iPod (which I’m sure was made during those early 2000s). So I decided to break out the ol’ lappy top and had a minor setback after I finally got iTunes (prob version 4) up and running. I accidentally shifted the power cord and the whole thing just fell to pieces and had to restart. So anyway I’m still waiting for some 2000 songs to transfer so I can now work out to Nelly, AC/DC, and the Coyote Ugly soundtrack. Life’s been good to me so far.
*** Update: I successfully transferred about 3000 songs to add to the 2000 songs already on this used iPod. Thanks Marcos for not wiping it before selling it! My newfound favorite workout songs are Timbaland’s “Release” and Dada Life’s “Rolling Stones T-shirt.” Is it creepy that I think I’ll keep “Marcos” as the name of this sweet iPod and not change it to “Mer”?

I still need to program my VCR. Nice blog!

Glad my dance movie obsession was helpful with getting some kick ass songs. My favorite was the game we played “guess that song as fast as you can”.

Thanks for the good laugh and even gooder read!

I love your blog. This one really brought it home for me. Seriously countless hours downloading songs! Remember getting a song almost all the way downloaded to have it quit right near the end. Uggh! My kids will never know how hard I worked to find “Fishin in the Dark” in Napster. Before that it was recording it from the radio. I vividly remember capturing “When I see you smile,” (Bad English) on cassette after requesting that they play it on the radio with *BONUS* my special dedication. Thanks for the walk down memory lane….or should I thank Marcos?
